Lessons Learned

All of us have made mistakes in ministry. Maybe not earth-shattering, CNN newsworthy mistakes. But it does not take a lot of transparency to admit that if we had it to do over, there are things about children’s ministry we’d like to go back and change.

One of my most memorable…

We were gearing up for our annual Christmas event… the “Birthday Party for Jesus”. We had had cake and ice cream, balloons, piƱatas, songs, and games galore in the past. At the close of the event, there would always be a quick teaching time reminding kids of the real Christmas story. We tried to introduce a new element to this event every year, and really make it feel like a birthday party.

One year, we brought in a balloon artist that we had used in the past for other events. Great guy with awesome skills! We thought it would be really cool for every kid to walk away with a balloon sculpture that day. The problem was, our teaching time was not until the end of the event. The lesson learned: If you bring in a balloon artist, attempting to make balloon sculptures for over 100 kids, make sure he does not start making balloons until after your lesson time. I don’t think anyone, including myself, remembered anything said that day due to the obnoxious, squeaking, squawking, bursting every 10 seconds balloons!
