I have been reading a book that has excellent ramification with leadership principles, written by Dr. Seuss, entitled, If I Ran The Zoo. In the book, Gerald McGrew is a kid who, when visiting a zoo, finds that the exotic animals are “not good enough”. He says that if he ran the zoo, he would let all of the current animals free and find new, more bizarre and exotic ones.
Isn’t it amazing the manner in which we who sit in the ‘number 2′ position often find ourselves critical of those above us? If we were in their position, we say, we would do things a lot differently. The decisions would have different outcomes. The money would be handled differently. Certain people wouldn’t have such great influence. We would let our staff be a little more dependent in their decision making. If we were the boss, we wouldn’t require regular office hours of our staff. The budget would be directed in a much different direction.
I would just like to challenge everyone who sits in the ‘number 2′ position to understand that God honors submission. There are some biblical and godly principles that will bring blessing to your life if they are honored. Show appreciation to those who are over you in the Lord on a regular basis. Support his vision and dreams, even if you don’t fully understand or agree. Find ways to visibly extend a helping hand. Remember that when God opened the door for you to go where you are, He knew all things and His desire is that you find your place to fit in the overall plan for His ministry there. Go overboard in showing gratitude and appreciation.
What are some ways you have been able to work through this process?
